Many women don’t have easy access to feminine health services. Research shows that about 9.5 million American women live in a county without a single gynecologist! But, how do you know if you need to see a gynecologist right away? Do you need to go every year, even when nothing is wrong? We put together a quick guide to help you recognize the 6 signs that you need to see the gyno ASAP. Keep reading to find out what you should know before you make a gynecologist appointment.
1. Irregular Menstrual Cycle
If you notice a change in your menstrual cycle or if it disappears altogether, call your gyno and get it checked out. Yes, stress and hormones could cause these irregularities, but so can pregnancy and ovarian issues.
2. Lady Itch or Discharge
Do you find yourself scratching yourself on the sly or a strange discharge in your underwear? These signs could mean you have a bacterial infection, yeast infection, or even an infection from a sexual encounter. When you notice these kinds of symptoms, call your gyno for an appointment ASAP!
3. Painful/ Burning When Urinating
If it burns or aches when you pee, that’s often a sign of urinary tract infection (UTI). Ignoring these symptoms could lead to bladder infections, fever, and worse. It’s best to get this checked out early to prevent the problem from snowballing.
4. Pain During Intercourse
Sometimes it hurts when you have sexual intercourse with your partner and even lube doesn’t help. When this happens, mention this to your gyno so they can rule out any health issues that could cause your problem.
5. Breast Pain or Irregularities
Keep in mind that not all gynecological issues happen below the belt. You should also check your breasts for abnormalities each month to make sure there are no changes or lumps. If you do notice any issue during a self-exam, there are many breast health specialists and gynecologists like those in the women’s healthcare association, who can help you through any potential breast health concerns.
6. Sores or Blisters on Your Genital Area
Not all sores and blisters come from STI’s (though most are), but these problems won’t go away on their own. As soon as you notice a sore or blister pop up, give your gyno a ring.
Don’t Become a Stranger to the Stirrups
